In the late game the current holders of the Night Series Floreat Athena started their defence with a come-from-behind 2-1 win against Inglewood United.
The home side hit the front after 20 minutes, Brian Woodall’s looping header beat Jason Saldaris. The visitors were level on the half hour, Ludovic Boi picked out the unmarked Declan Hargreaves 25 yards from goal, and the former Bayswater City players’ shot flew into the top corner of the net giving Alex Dunn no chance.
But it wasn’t until stoppage time in the second half that Floreat secured the points. A corner was only cleared to the edge of the box, and second half substitute Andrew Scaldaferro volleyed home superbly to seal the win.
Hargreaves was pleased with his debut for the club but said it wasn’t their best performance. “We weren’t at our best if I was honest,” he said. “But the sign of good team is you can win even when you don’t play your best, I’m just happy to get on the scoresheet and help the side to the win.”
