Floreat Athena Football Club is delighted to announce the re-appointment of Garrett McDuling as senior coach for season 2020.

The signing comes after the 36-year old led the Blue and Whites to a consecutive night series championship which was followed up by a State Cup Final title. The team’s win in the Belt-Up Cup sent Athena through to the RD 32 in the FFA Cup where they clashed against Adelaide Olympic in the penultimate Greek Derby.

McDuling said it was an honour to lead the troops again, after finishing this season in the top four.

“I’d like to thank the board for entrusting me with the coaching duties for another season. We are unashamedly eyeing off more titles in 2020 but we also want to build up across our juniors and reserve squads”.

“My philosophy is about enhancing the club culture and setting a winning mentality. We have a great senior team but we also have a number of promising youngsters who are all champing at the bit, keen to make their mark in senior football” he said.

McDulling’s tenure has been extended after coming to the club midway through the 2018 season when the team was facing relegation after an ordinary run of results.

Athena Interim Board spokesman Emmanuel Takoniatis said the management committee was unanimous in reappointing the coach.

“Garrett was presented with an opportunity to take over the reins last year and we have seen him work closely with the players, who have responded in a professional manner” he said.

McDuling’s trusted lieutenant in Tim Cash has also been re-appointed to assist the Head Coach.

“Tim is great. He does a lot of heavy lifting behind the scenes that nobody sees and for me that is priceless. Tim and I are determined and eager to take Athena to another level and we hope we can show the fans and the board the full extent of our aspirations”.

The senior coaching team has been boosted with the addition of Antony Benetti and Zack Morgan as coaches of the club’s under 20s. The pair was successful in leading Stirling Lion’s Under 18s to the Top Four Grand Final this year.

Meanwhile Frank Mariano will take stewardship of the U-18s while Athena’s 16s NPL squad will be coached by Giordan Serra. All senior coaches will collaborate with club Technical Director Dr Fadi Maayah.

The club is confident the senior coaching team will help bring about both on-field and off-field success in 2020 and beyond.

The 2020 pre-season for the senior squads commence early next month.
