FLOREAT ATHENA FOOTBALL CLUB
Athena ready for A-League Goliath
A classic David and Goliath battle looms in Western Australia’s soccer circles as National Premier League WA club Floreat Athena FC prepares to host Hyundai A-League glamour outfit Melbourne City in the RD of 32 FFA Cup clash on August 2.
After eliminating fellow WA team Inglewood United 9-2 to reach the State Cup final and earn a berth in the national knock-out phase, Athena is preparing for its biggest match in its 65-year rich history.
Floreat Athena, home to the WA reigning best player (Football West Gold medallist) Ludo Boi, has also unearthed several A-League and NSL stars including Aryn Williams, Doug Ithier, Vas Kalogeracos and popular Socceroos Bobby Despotovski (the inaugural Johnny Warren Medallist) and Stan Lazaridis (58 caps).
Athena coach Glen Grostate said the club was thrilled to be playing in the FFA Cup against the Victorians who are owned by EPL giants Manchester City.
“We’re all excited about the quality they will bring to Perth. When we were at the draw we thought they forgot to put our ball in – we were the last team drawn out and as a semi-pro outfit you very rarely get the chance to test yourself in a real competitive match against an A-League side, “he said.
“This is a wonderful moment for the club and it’s great for the players, for me and especially our supporters and sponsors,” he added.
Club captain Boi said the looming cup clash was the highlight of his career.
“Absolutely. We’re all excited about our moment on the national stage. I am very proud being the captain of Floreat Athena Football Club and leading this group of players” he said.
Boi who has already notched up with 8 goals this season said his team wasn’t daunted by the might and power of City’s goal scoring sensation Bruno Fornaroli who emerged as the top goal scorer in the Hyundai A-League last season.
“This is the magic of the cup. We will be in front of our home fans, our families and friends and we are well up for it… we will be working our socks off to snatch an upset win and progress to the Round of 16.”
The game will be held at Dorrien Gardens in North Perth on Tuesday 2 August 2016 with kick off at 6:30pm.
